Jael Jones

Biography:
Born in Hannover, Germany in 1969, Jazz Singer Jael Jones received a classical piano training at the gentle age of four. At the same time she discovered her affection for Soul-, Bossa Nova- and Jazz music. Inspired by fabulous musicians such as Quincy Jones, George Benson and Al Jarreau, she took benefit of her pianist´s talent to compose and arrange numerous Soul-Ballads at the age of twelve.

In 1999 Jael completed her law studies at the Hannover University with a state examination. Meanwhile she worked on numerous musical projects: Frontsinger of Soulband ‘His Masters Voice’, the projects ‘Soul of the City’ and ‘The Soulciety Funky Family’ side by side with international artists like Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Karl Denson and Cunnie Williams, Background singer on Randy Crawford´s album ‘Naked and True’. With her band ‘His Masters Voice’ she supported Maceo Parker on several Live-Gigs.

Jael lived in Los Angeles and New York City, where she realized more and more that Jazz was her destiny. She worked with artists such as guitarist Phil Upchurch and jammed with Queen Latifah and Chaka Khan.

Back in Germany, she performed in several projects, such as Christoph Isermann´s Data Opera ‘Scuzzy Buzzy’, ‘Brazilution’, commercial radio spots, and together with Marathon Music the Charity Project ‘Give it from your heart’.

She was solo singer of the ‘Lothar Krist Hannover Big Band’, where she performed ‘Duke Elligton´s Concert of Sacred Music’ and the ‘Norwegian Sacred Jazz Concert’. She worked in different band formations, such as the Brazil-Trio ‘Deja Nero’ or the ‘Golden Age Quartet’ and performed side by side with Blues Singer Ron Ringwood, Gene ‘Mighty Flea’ Conners, Cunnie Williams, Hajo Hoffmann and Benny Golson.

In 2001 she set up the ‘Jael Jones’ Quintet, joined by established artists like Andy Mokrus (Piano), Markus Horn (piano), Christoph Münch (piano), Hervé Jeanne (bass; Roger Cicero), Frank Fiedler (bass; Tok, Tok, Tok), Andreas Edelmann (bass), Timo Warnecke (drums), Dennis Frehse (drums), Matthias Meusel (drums; Roger Cicero, Mousse T.), Ralph König (guitar), Hajo Hoffmann (Jazz violin). In her quintet she participates as singer, songwriter and producer.

Jael´s musical repertoire and her voice distinguish with their riches of facets and a great sense of rhythm. The singer feels home in Swing as well as in Bossa Nova, Latin and Soul, which mirrors in her unique interpretation of Jazz Standards and in her own compositions. Jael Jones lately released her Septet album “Gently”.

bauhof Hemmingen was sold out. Everybody wanted to hear and see Jael Jones. Some Jazz lovers even put up without a seat.
And it was worth it: the audience was enthusiastic…
…And then Jael Jones entered the stage. With her dark voice and her great ability to modulate she won everybody´s heart in the blink of an eye.
During her musicians soli she closed her eyes and simply enjoyd the music.
Groovy titles with strong accents and smooth ballads – the quartet showed a great range of Jazz- and Soul music.

…despite thunder, lightning and rain the audience enjoyed ‘Laid back Summer Jazz’…
Not only convinced Jael Jones with her charismatic and expressive voice, but also won the audience´s affection with her natural and sympathic character.

…a real musical treat…
Jael Jones and her accompanists turn the evening on the Island into a wonderful event.
Jael Jones´ career led her to Los Angeles, where she met well known musicians like Randy Crawford, Chaka Khan and Phil Upchurch.
Back in Hannover, she participated on Randy Crawford´s album ‘Naked And True’ and later became front singer of the Hannover Big Band.
She had discovered her love and affection for swing, which shows in the diversity of her program.
Jazz, Pop, Latin and Soul determined her performance on the Island.
Along with outstanding musicians (Béatrice Kahl on piano, Matthias Meusel (Mousse T.) on drums and Ulli Füller (Hannover Big Band) on bass) she interpreted Swing and Latin, own pieces like ‘You´ve conquered my Love’ and – following her american mainstream-influence – pieces composed by Stevie Wonder, Carol King and Van Morrison, whose song ‘Have I told You lately’ became a wonderfully swinging tune by the voice of Jael Jones.
In a very jazzy way she continued with Dave Brubeck´s ‘Take Five’, which – by Jael´s beautiful voice and her great musicians – became a real musical enjoyment.
The evening with Jael Jones and her band proved of great quality and we wish her back to the Island´s Festival very soon…

JAZZ SINGER ALONG WITH BASS AND PIANO
…right in the heart of the city:
an atmosphere as in the Jazz Clubs from the 40´s:
In the ‘Café Lohengrin’ Jael and her musicians arouse great enthusiasm among the audience by performing a surprisingly rich mélange of Latin-, Jazz- and Swing-Ballads.
The singer discovered her love and affection for Jazz in New York and Los Angeles after enjoying a classical training on the piano.
Her warm and tender voice and her extraordinary and outstanding sense of rhythm make well-known songs like ‘I can´t give You anything but Love’ or ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ turn into a great musical treat.
Jael Jones was accompanied by two of Hannover´s great and excellently harmonizing musicians: Andreas Edelmann on bass and Eike Wulfmeier on piano, who proved great dynamics and empathy.
The concert was closed by Jael Jones and her virtuous accompanists with the beautiful tune ‘That´s all’.

Parallel dazu entdeckte sie schon sehr früh ihre Liebe zum Gesang und zur Soul-, Bossa Nova- und Jazzmusik. Inspiriert durch internationale Größen wie Quincy Jones, George Benson und Al Jarreau, nutzte sie ihre Talente am Klavier und komponierte und arrangierte bereits im Alter von 12 Jahren zahlreiche Soulballaden.

Neben ihrem Jurastudium arbeitete sie an zahlreichen Musikprojekten, als Sängerin bei der Soulband His Masters Voice, bei den Projekten ‘Soul of the City’ und ‘The Soulciety Funky Family’ Seite an Seite mit namhaften Musikern wie Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis und Karl Denson und wirkte unter anderem als Sängerin bei CD-Aufnahmen von Randy Crawford (Crusaders) und Cunnie Williams mit. Mit ihrer Band ‘His Masters Voice’ hatte sie zahlreiche Auftritte als Support-Band von Maceo Parker.

Jael Jones lebte längere Zeit in New York und Los Angeles, wo sie sich immer mehr dem Jazz verschrieb, und arbeitete mit Jazzgrößen wie Phil Upchurch zusammen.

Zurück in Hannover, wirkte sie in zahlreichen Projekten wie der von Christoph Isermann produzierten Datenoper ‘Scuzzy Buzzy’, dessen Projekt ‘Brazilution’, und gemeinsam mit Hanz Marathon (Marathon Music) bei dem Charity-Projekt der Bildzeitung ‘Give it from your heart’ mit , war Frontsängerin der ‘Lothar Krist Hannover Big Band’ bei Duke Ellington ‘s ‘Concert of Sacred Music’ und der ‘Norwegischen Jazzmesse’, arbeitete in verschiedenen Bands wie dem Brazil-Trio ‘Deja Nero’, dem ‘Golden Age Quartet’ und konzertierte gemeinsam mit dem Sänger Ron Ringwood, Gene ‘Mighty Flea’ Conners, Cunnie Williams, dem Jazzgeiger Hajo Hoffmann und Benny Golson.

2001 gründete sie das Jael Jones Quintet, dem etablierte Künstler der hannoverschen Jazzszene wie die Pianisten Christoph Münch, Andy Mokrus und Markus Horn, die Bassisten Andreas Edelmann, Hervé Jeanne und Frank Fiedler (TokTokTok), Gitarrist Ralph König, Jazzgeiger Hajo Hoffmann, Schlagzeuger Timo Warnecke, Dennis Frehse und Matthias Meusel (Roger Cicero/ Mousse T.) angehören. Das musikalische Repertoire von Jael Jones und deren Stimme zeichnen sich besonders durch ihren Reichtum an Facetten und einem ausgeprägten Rhythmusgefühl aus. DAS PUBLIKUM SCHWELGT IN SANFTEN TÖNEN
Sie liebt gefühlvolle Balladen, das gibt die Sängerin Jael Jones bei Ihrem Konzert im Kulturzentrum bauhof gern zu. “Deshalb quäle ich Sie mit einer weiteren”, kündigt sie an, streicht sich die dunkelbraunen langen Haare aus dem Gesicht und lächelt ein wenig frech.
Doch als das Jazz-Quintet zu dem Jazz-Standard “Nature Boy” anhebt und Jael Jones die Geschichte eines herumreisenden kleinen Jungen besingt, ist beim Publikum von Qual keine Spur.
Im Gegenteil: Einige Zuhörer im ausverkauften Saal haben die Augen geschlossen und schwelgen entspannt in der sanften Mischung aus stimme, Piano, Kontrabass, Saxophon und Schlagzeug, andere wippen mit den Füssen oder klopfen den Takt leise vor sich hin. Genuss pur.

…Und dann kam Jael Jones auf die Bühne. Mit ihrer dunklen und modulationsfähigen Stimme gewann sie schnell die Herzen des Publikums. Bei den Soli der Musiker legte sie den Kopf in den Nacken und genoss mit geschlossenen Augen die Musik.

Jael Jones und ihre Begleiter machten den Abend auf der Insel zu einem wunderbaren Erlebnis.
Die Karriere der in Hannover lebenden Musikerin führte sie nach Los Angeles, wo sie unter anderem mit Randy Crawford (Crusaders) arbeitete.
Zurück in Hannover partizipierte die Sängerin in der Hannover Big Band. Sie hatte ihre Liebe zum Swing entdeckt, was sich in ihrem Programm zeigt. Jazz, Swing, Pop, Latin und Soul bestimmen den Auftritt auf der Insel.
Mit ihren ebenso hervorragenden Begleitern Béatrice Kahl am Piano, Matthias Meusel (Mousse T.)am Schlagzeug und Ulli Füller (Hannover Big Band)am Kontrabass intonierte sie Swing und Latin, eigene Stücke wie ‘You´ve conquered my Love’ und – dem amerikanischen Einfluss folgend-Stücke von Stevie Wonder, Carole King und Van Morrison.
Dessen ‘Have I told You lately’ wurde durch Jael Jones wunderbar jazzig-swingig.
Jazzig ging es ebenfalls bei Dave Brubeck´s Welthit ‘Take Five’ zu, der durch Jael Jones´ Stimme und deren Zusammenspiel mit den drei Vollblutmusikern zu einem echten Hörgenuss wurde…
